1. Name of Station

Qianyanzhou Experimental Station of Red Soil and Hilly Land (Qianyanzhou Station for short), Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)

2. The history of Qianyanzhou Station

In 1982, the station was founded by CAS as the pilot experimental site of Integrated Scientific Survey in Mountainous-hilly Region of South China. In 1985, it was designated as the base of Integrated Development Demonstration Base of Mountain-Lake-River Project of Jiangxi Province. In 1998, the CAS and Jiangxi Provincial Government officially established the Station and gave its present name. In 1992, MAB nominated it as international experimental station, and UND Jiangxi Project used as a training center. Since 1998, it has been one of the basic CERN stations. In 2002, Jiangxi Key Laboratory for Ecological Process and Information System was established and affiliated to the station.

3. Natural Conditions of Qianyanzhou Station

The station lies in the Taihe County, central Jiangxi Province (26°44'N, 115°4'E). The average elevation is approximately 100m, relative relief is 20-50m, and the annual mean temperature is 17.8. The annual active accumulated temperature (e0 and e10) is 6523 and 6015 respectively. The annual mean rainfall is 1360mm, the sunshine is 44 , solar total radiation is 4349MJm-2, and frost-free period is 290 d. The station is situated in the north part of North Sub-tropic zone with red earth hills. The original vegetation used to be evergreen broad-leaved forest, but due to degradation, it was replaced by planted forest and grassland, shrub and some secondary vegetation. The planted pine forest, citrus garden, farmland and fish pond are main land use types, the red soil, paddy soil and meadow soil are main soil types. Soil-forming materials are red sand tone, sand gravel tone, debris tone and steam sediments.

4. Long-term Objective of Qianyanzhou Station

The long-term objective is to study the ecological process and the environmental impacts of ecosystem degradation and restoration. In recent years, priorities have been given to the study on carbon and water Fluxes of forests, the impact of UV-B enrichment on agricultural ecosystem the sustainable management of water and soil resources and integrated river basin management.

5. The Major Tasks of Qianyanzhou Station

  • The characteristics of material cycle in ecosystem and its environmental impacts
  •  Forest primary productivity and its structure at community level.
  • Mechanism of sustentation and measures of conservation of subtropical forest ecosystem
  • Policy options for degraded ecosystem restoration
  • Hydrological process and river basins management
