Based on the meta-analysis, we quantified global patterns and underlying mechanisms of soil acidification in response to nitrogen deposition (Tian et al., 2015. Environmental Research Letter), the finding was awarded top 1% the most cited paper in environmental science in China in 2018. A systematic review of previous hypotheses in nitrogen cycle and combined with the model results was carried out for the first time to put forward nitrogen substrate-based hypothesis (Niu et al. 2016. Ecological Letters), which reveals the universal rule of ecosystem nitrogen cycle in the view of ecological and biological mechanisms.
